Conexión Jaguar confirms project for the preservation of nearly 40,000 hectares of forest in Amazonas

  • This will be done through Rio Murú, a REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) conservation project in the state of Acre, Brazil, which contributes to the preservation of this biome that is considered the lungs of the world.
  • Over the next 40 years, the project is expected to generate 4.9 million carbon credits, with the potential to reduce 120,000 tons of CO2e per year, equivalent to the emissions of nearly 27,000 cars.
  • In this biome, deforestation in 2023 was estimated at eight trees per second.

Through ISA CTEEP, ISA’s leading company in the energy transmission sector in Brazil, the Conexión Jaguar program confirms its support for the development of a new environmental conservation project in the Brazilian Amazon.

The main objective of the project is to promote forest conservation and mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and degradation in the Amazon biome, considered one of the most threatened in the world. In 2023, an estimated 1,245 hectares were deforested per day, equivalent to eight trees per second, according to the 2023 Brazil annual Deforestation Report conducted annually by MapBiomas, an initiative developed by the Climate Observatory in partnership with universities, NGOs, and companies.

The project will also generate positive impacts on biodiversity by protecting from deforestation at least seven plant species that are home to at least 29 species of animals that have been identified in the “International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List” as being under some degree of threat. Among the list is the jaguar (Panthera onca). Also, on the social front, the project seeks to act in the areas of infrastructure, education, health, and economy to provide long-term benefits to the communities living in the project area in the state of Acre, Brazil.

“Conexión Jaguar is undoubtedly one of the most impactful corporate volunteer programs on the continent. Through actions to protect natural resources, we contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, the development of rural communities and the connectivity of the jaguar’s natural habitats in Latin America, a species indicative of the health and conservation status of ecosystems,” said Jorge Andrés Carrillo, CEO of ISA.

“This is the second biome, after the Pantanal, that the Conexión Jaguar program supports in Brazil. There are more than 176,000 thousand hectares where conservation actions are being carried out in these two ecosystems, which are key to mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity,” said Juliana Suso, ISA’s Chief Institutional Relations Officer.

With the proceeds from the sale of carbon credits generated by the project, the company expects to reinvest in new conservation and reforestation initiatives.

More about Conexión Jaguar

ISA takes a proactive role in the protection and conservation of natural resources and works to generate positive contributions to nature through its Sustainability program Conexión Jaguar.

Conexión Jaguar is a sustainability program developed by ISA and its companies to contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, the development of rural communities and the connectivity of the natural habitats of the jaguar (Panthera onca) in Latin America.

After more than seven years of developing the Conexión Jaguar program, it now has a presence in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Chile, where it is known as Conexión Puma. The program has generated more than ten partnerships, through which it has contributed to the conservation and restoration of important ecosystems. These alliances have contributed to the conservation of more than 400 thousand hectares of forest with a reduction potential of more than 4.5 million tCO2e, of which more than 500 thousand have already been verified and certified.

With these results, the program contributes to the fulfillment of the global goals of the 2030 agenda, such as the Paris Agreement, the Biodiversity Convention, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically to Climate Action (13), Life on Land (15) and Partnerships for the Goals (17).
