ISA ENERGÍA in BRAZIL, the country’s leading energy transmission company, announced the commercial start-up of the Riacho Grande Project, located in the state of São Paulo, five months ahead of the regulatory deadline set by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). The new project, awarded in Transmission Tender No. 01/2020, increases the reliability, security, and flexibility of the electricity supply for more than two million people in the Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo.

With an investment expected by ANEEL of USD 210 million, the project includes 44.6 kilometers of underground line, 9 kilometers of overhead lines, and a new GIS (Gas-insulated switchgear) substation with a capacity of 800 MVA in Sao Caetano do Sul, in addition to the expansion of two existing substations: Miguel Reale and Sul.

One of the main differentiators of the Riacho Grande Project is the implementation of the longest underground transmission line built in Brazil, with 44.6 kilometers of extension. This infrastructure connects the Sao Paulo capital with the ABC region, enabling the expansion of new loads and the strengthening of industrial growth.

Underground cables incorporate real-time monitoring technology capable of detecting temperature variations and potential faults, increasing network resilience and facilitating preventive maintenance. The works were conducted using construction methods that preserve urban traffic, minimizing the impact on the population.

During its implementation, the project generated around 2,200 direct and indirect jobs and promoted various social and environmental initiatives. Among these are: environmental education programs in public schools in Santo André and São Bernardo do Campo; support for urban agriculture initiatives in project areas; and the renovation of the Recanto Vida Nova shelter, which provides care for homeless people.
